Award winning green credentials
Drayton Garden Village is a truly sustainable development - literally from its foundations. It makes excellent use of a redundant brownfield site, using tons of recycled materials, and everything about it, from the way it is being built, to the way residents will be able to live, says sustainability.
Prestigious award
It is an approach that has led to Inland Homes plc winning the prestigious Land Award, sponsored by the Land Trust, at the annual Sustain Magazine Awards. This recognises the overall concept of Drayton Garden Village as well as specific features such as the energy centre which provides heating to the village homes; energy efficient design which means that all homes meet the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4; water conservation; and the protection and enhancement of local ecology.
Innovative energy supply
Drayton Garden Village is to be as low carbon as possible, achieving an annual reduction of 43% in CO2 emissions. This is good for the environment of course, but also good for keeping utility bills low. The energy centre heats homes efficiently using a gas-fired combined heat and power engine (CHP), supplemented by 700 square metre solar heating panels. It is the first time such a heating system has been used across a development of houses apartments, carehome and commercial units and is one of the initiatives included by Inland Homes plc.
Greener all round
All the homes have low-flow taps, WCs and showers, recycling facilities, cycle storage, excellent thermal insulation, low energy lighting and A+ rated appliances: all details which add up to a greener lifestyle and lower bills.
The larger-than-average amount of green space within the village, both public and private, is good for biodiversity, and if residents want to grow their own vegetables, they'll be able to. It also encourages natural water dispersal, something that the former RAF West Drayton's 31 acres of concrete and tarmac did not do!
